OpenAI has quietly switched off a ChatGPT feature that let users steer conversations toward erotic role-play. The company now says the test generated “unexpected challenges” and is stepping back while it reworks the safeguards.
What was the erotic role-play feature?
Earlier this year, OpenAI released a model nicknamed “GPT-4o” to a small group of paying subscribers. The update shipped with a system instruction that allowed “romantic and erotic” dialogue if the user signaled they wanted an adult scenario. Screenshots posted on Reddit showed the bot happily playing along with flirtatious prompts, sometimes escalating to explicit language.
Why did OpenAI turn it off?
In a short post on its developer forum, OpenAI said the test “exposed gaps in our moderation pipeline.” Users quickly found ways to bypass the built-in refusals, leading to conversations that violated the company’s own use-policy against sexually explicit content. Rather than patch holes on the fly, the team elected to disable the capability entirely while it “re-evaluates approach and policy.”
Does this change ChatGPT’s overall rules?
No. The core policy remains the same: you still can’t use ChatGPT to generate hard-core porn, non-consensual imagery, or minors in sexual contexts. The retreat simply removes the short-lived exception that had permitted consensual adult role-play for users who opted in.
What happens next?
OpenAI told testers it will “take time to study logs, refine filters, and consult external experts” before any future release. There’s no public timeline for bringing erotic dialogue back, and the company warns that when it does return, it will likely be “tightly scoped and behind stricter age gates.”
